Abstract
A requirement exists for demultiplexing the two predominant telecommunications wavelength windows of 1.3 μm and 1.5 μm, with low loss and low crosstalk. For example, in modern telecommunications systems these wavelengths could be used for telephony and video respectively. This function can be achieved in silica-on-silicon with a Mach-Zehnder device. This is a low-loss component with low crosstalk around the operating wavelengths. Its design using a simple model will be described the sensitivity of the design to the design parameters will be examined. The fabrication process will be outlined and the device performance will be presented
