Abstract :
The author discusses the choices available in the servo market for properly equipping a servo positioning system that has fairly stringent performance requirements. Three types of servo-motor package are discussed: a DC brush-type servomotor and amplifier; a DC brushless servomotor and amplifier; and an AC brushless servomotor and amplifier. An attempt is made to show the performance advantages of each, as well as some of the physical differences between them. Performance is defined to mean the degree to which the particular motor/amplifier package is able to make the required positioning move, in the desired amount of time, without danger of instability or overheating
