Abstract :
A new generator static exciter with boost function (boost-buck chopper exciter) is proposed to overcome the lack of field forcing capability of the conventional bus fed exciter which can not maintain the generator terminal voltage under a fault condition. The validity of the proposed exciter is verified using computer simulation. The proposed exciter has the capability to supply the ceiling current even if the exciter input voltage decreases to 55% of the rated voltage compared with that of conventional bus fed exciter at normal condition. The function of the proposed exciter is tested and verified using voltage and load step function tests on the 25 kVA synchronous generator driven by a DC motor
