The author provides general guidelines to determine when a servo drive should be considered for an application. Examples of servo drive applications are presented along with reasons why a servo drive was selected for that application. Specific applications considered are winding; line shaft synchronization; indexing; drilling, tapping, and boring. Various control schemes are discussed
