Abstract :
The results presented in this article show GPS antennas in current commercially available handsets to be far from optimal for the life-saving E-911 or future E-112 emergency location roles. This paper has demonstrated that a dielectrically loaded antenna with an integral balun in the feed system can significantly improve the reception of a GPS signal in a small handset for real-life scenarios. It is this sort of robust and predictable performance that should be associated and standardised for such an important role in mobile telecommunications.
