Abstract
The PHS (Personal Handy phone System) technology that comes from Japan realizes high quality and low cost mobile communication in a honeycomb and abundant value-added services. Having considered many advantages of PHS, this paper proposes ETC online system based on PHS as a technological evolution to substitute for the traditional DSRC. After comparing DSRC with PHS, this paper discusses the framework and layer architecture of the system. Besides the functions concerned as vehicle identification and wireless communication, this paper also designs routing identification and toll apportionment functions to meet the needs of ETC. And the newly-designed functions can not be provided by DSRC. By appending the presentation layer, the system can make full use of the existing function modules of DSRC and PHS, and the reconstruction will be greatly saved. Moreover, the system can extend many value-added services of PHS to the expressway, such as broadcast and inquiry of the expressway´s information, traffic abduction, emergency communication, etc.
