Abstract
The performance of small resonant antennas must be improved in order to meet the requirements of future multiband personal mobile communication terminals. This paper considers the use of integrated low-loss matching circuits for improving the performance of compact patch type internal dual-band handset antennas. With the studied matching circuit, the bandwidth of an existing antenna design could be increased to cover an additional communication system band without increasing the antenna size or decreasing its radiation efficiency considerably. However, the results also show that although the proposed circuit approximately doubles the bandwidth at the desired band, it can decrease the bandwidth and radiation efficiency at other bands.
