Abstract :
This work discusses and contrasts several competing approaches currently being explored to overcome the capacity and bit rate bottlenecks imposed by intercell interference. In light of this discussion, we then pose the question of whether macrocells can continue playing the primary role they have historically played in the wireless revolution and we speculate on what the future might hold for cellular systems within the communication landscape that is shaping up.
