Abstract
The spontaneous ignition of cathode spot arcs, on the walls/shield of high power vacuum circuit breakers, is illustrated. This is proposed as an explanation for abnormally high shield currents. Possible triggering mechanisms are discussed in relation to the interactions between the vacuum arc plasma and a fixed potential shield.
