Abstract
We have been developing a Compton scattering type polarimeter which consists of nine unit counters to detect the polarization of hard X-rays from stellar objects such as the Crab Nebula. One unit counter which consists of one plastic scintillator (7×7×5 cm3 ) and four phoswich counters (6.7×1.1×32.2 cm3 ) made of NaI(Tl)+CsI(Na) was constructed and its performance was measured in detail. The detection efficiency and the modulation factor of the unit counter were about 30% and 25% for energies between 50 keV and 200 keV. Based on them, the performance of the polarimeter is estimated by full computer simulations. From the results, it is recognized that the polarimeter can detect the polarization of hard X-rays from the Crab Nebula in a balloon observation of 3 hours by MDP of 15%
