  • Abstract
In a combined network environment consisting of two different types of network infrastructures an interworking unit is required. The design and implementation of such an interworking unit is presented. The design is a top-down approach bearing in mind the cost effectiveness and simplicity of the solution. The interworking unit presented performs an ATM network termination using AAL5 protocol layer and allows an audio-visual stream to be directed into a digital cable TV system. The timing recovery mechanism is a simple feedback mechanism with a stop-and-go rate control functionality. The design presented has been implemented in hardware with the rate control mechanism
