Abstract
The need for standards in communications and networks in the textile and related industries is discussed. The types of protocols used in the industry from the machine level to a computer-integrated manufacturing environment are described. Several case studies are given to illustrate specific problems and needs. A summary of the current status and potential future development of standards in this area is presented
