Abstract
The production monitoring system plays a pivotal role in the modern manufacturing scenario. As the production process evolves in order to face the challenges posed by increasingly shorter product lifecycles associated to demands from the customers such as reduced costs, mass customization and better energy efficiency, so too must the production monitoring system adapt to face the new industrial reality. This paper looks at how current production monitoring can be improved by the application of the Service-oriented Architecture paradigm to that field. By linking sensor signals to Web Services, it is possible to perform orchestration of the available monitoring indexes in order to extract a better view of the production status.
