  • Abstract
A software package that measures breath-by-breath oxygen consumption and effective pulmonary blood flow with acetylene rebreathing is presented. The measurements are performed in both cardiopulmonary stress testing and intensive care unit environments. The system accommodates neonatal to adult patients, whether ventilated or spontaneously breathing. It runs on AT-compatible computers and utilizes analog outputs from most pneumotach systems and respiratory mass spectrometers. Rapid-response oxygen and carbon dioxide analyzers may also be utilized for the metabolic measurements
