Abstract :
Photonic crystal confinement in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers is demonstrated as a technology for achieving operation in the fundamental transverse mode with up to several milliwatts of output power, and is extended to multiple defects to achieve in-phase coherent coupling within a 2-dimensional array.
