Abstract :
The oral bacteria, Wolinella recta, were exposed to sonic energy both aerobically and anaerobically for various durations. It was observed that a significantly greater number of bacteria were killed in an aerobic environment. The results indicate a previously unreported effect of acoustic energy on anaerobic bacteria. The effect has potential use in a home-based sonic dental instrument for controlling bacterial plaque formation
