Abstract
A new kind of top-sleeve is designed to greatly enhance the bandwidth of a monopole operating in a parallel plate waveguide. A modal expansion technique is extended to numerically evaluate the characteristics of the monopole with a top-sleeve. Based on the numerical simulations, a prototype of a monopole with a top-sleeve is made for 5.8 GHz applications. The relevant measurements validate the numerical simulations and engineering design. Compared to traditional structures, this modified monopole has a merit of a very broad impedance bandwidth with a good match and still maintains the feature of simple structure, low cost, and pure polarization
