Abstract :
A possible mechanism that the self-fields effect of the relativistic electron beam plays a dominant role in the power enhancement of a 35 GHz/61 MW free-electron laser with a reversed guide magnetic field is proposed. Qualitative explanation is that the self-fields felt by the electrons are different when the axial guide magnetic field is reversed from positive to negative, which changes the electrons´ motion and results in different energy exchange between the electron beam and the wave
