Abstract
EMA was created in 2001 to regulate the electricity and gas industries. With the deregulation process, large contestable consumers are allowed to purchase power from different retailers. This has lead to a drop in their costs of electricity by about 6%, showcasing the benefits of introducing competition in the electricity market. Furthermore, as the demand for power changes from reliability to quality, the need to improve on metering has evolved, for both utility and end consumers, from collecting consumption to real-time power quality (PQ) information as part of a complete energy management program. With the advent of rising oil prices, escalating electricity tariffs and the opportunities from de-regulation, it had been a rapidly changing scene in the use of technologies and application for automatic metering for the last few years. This paper intends to provide an insight on the growth and changes of the electricity market and metering trends in Singapore on how they shape each other by exploring case studies of some recent projects utilising AMR technologies for their energy management systems
