Abstract
The paper presents a feasibility study that considers Variable-Capacitance (V-C) machines to be contenders for the direct generation of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power in offshore wind farm applications. The study uses 3D finite element analysis to predict the generator capacitance variation with rotor position and a Matlab / Simulink model to predict the machine operation and circuit optimisation. A small prototype machine has been built and tested to provide some validation of the simulation studies.
