Abstract
This paper presents a convenient method for designing piecewise optimal control laws for damping sustained oscillations in FACTS using Walsh functions. The useful properties of Walsh functions have been used to neatly develop a piecewise optimal control with multiple control inputs, which can be used for discrete optimal switching of FACTS devices, to steer the system from a stressed scenario to a stable one. A sample single machine infinite bus system modeled by a 10th order nonlinear model is used to corroborate the findings
