Abstract :
The performance of a 42 W compact fluorescent lamp and its associated electronic ballast has been simulated in PSPICE. Both behavioural and physics-based models for the lamp were considered and the former was found to give good results with the benefit of easy implementation. The predictions of circuit currents and losses closely match experimentally measured values. Losses were measured directly in a calorimeter. Using simulation to disaggregate the total loss figure, it is seen that the output resonant inductor makes the largest contribution to the total losses in the electronic ballast.
