Abstract :
Summary form only given. Tetrahedrally coordinated Co/sup 2+/-doped Y/sub 3/Al/sub 5/O/sub 12/, Y/sub 3/Sc/sub 2/Ga/sub 3/O/sub 12/, ZnSe, and glass ceramic can be used as saturable absorbers for passive Q-switching of 1.5 /spl mu/m Er/sup 3+/:glass lasers. Furthermore, the crystals doped with tetrahedral Co/sup 2+/ ions are considered as candidates for a tunable solid state laser in the visible and near infrared. We report here on Q-switching and mode-locking of a 1.34 /spl mu/m Nd/sup 3+/:YAlO/sub 3/ laser as well as Q-switching of a 1.54 /spl mu/m Er/sup 3+/:glass laser using Co/sup 2+/:MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ crystal as saturable absorber. Absorption saturation and picosecond differential absorption spectra of the Co/sup 2+/:MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ crystal are investigated.
