  • Abstract
    Summary form only given. Tuneable sources for DWDM applications based on semiconductor laser diodes will not be viable until the cost and time involved in characterisation decreases. The SG-DBR laser has the potential for such applications however it is a complex multi-section device. Each WDM channel requires a set of four controlling currents to obtain the correct operating point. Therefore to obtain 100 channels to fulfill the ITU G692 specification requires the measurement of output power and wavelength for hundreds of thousands of combinations of input currents. Wavelength measurements are costly and time consuming and this type of full characterisation takes one week to complete.
