Abstract :
A new acoustic Doppler current profiler has been developed and tested for mean current measurements in shallow water (<100 m). The instrument profiles the water velocity in a user selectable number of depth cells where the size of the cells, the number of cells, and the total range is a function of acoustic frequency. This non-intrusive method for current measurements provides the vertical velocity profile over typical time scales of one minute or more and can replace several types of single-point current meters, including propeller meters, acoustic travel-time systems, and electromagnetic sensors
