Abstract :
Summary form only given. High finesse cavities have recently been used to produce an optically pumped, non-resonant cw Raman laser at 683 nm (Stokes) with a threshold of less than 5 mW pump power. However, these measurements were limited to pump rates of greater than 4 to 5 times threshold. We report data for output power and photon conversion efficiency as functions of pump power near threshold and compared to theory previously developed for a similar system. A threshold measurement of 3.2/spl plusmn/0.4 mW optical pump power and photon conversion efficiency as high as 40% are demonstrated.
