Abstract :
An RLS-based adaptive equalizer with diversity combining was previously proposed for use in the US TDMA digital cellular system. The present authors investigate the performance of this equalizer in conjunction with channel coding. The channel coding scheme used is the rate-1/2 convolutional encoding and Viterbi decoding as proposed in EIA/TIA standard IS-54 for the North American digital cellular system. Adaptive equalization, diversity reception, and error correction coding are effective solutions for overcoming the problem of multipath fading observed in mobile radio communications. The authors study a combination of all three of these techniques along with a longer training sequence obtained from the TDMA frame structure and present simulation results
