Abstract :
In this paper, first, an EBG and an HIS structures are used as the ground planes of a microstrip antenna in two different designs. In the first design, the microstrip antenna is placed on a mushroom-like structure which acts as an EBG in the desirable frequency range. Its radiation patterns are plotted. Then, in the second design, shorting pins of the aforementioned EBG are removed and it is shown that the periodic structure no longer acts as an EBG.
