  • Abstract
Due to the use of microprocessor technology, a large number of intelligent functions that could not be carried out using conventional and static technology can now be realized. This includes new power system protection algorithms as well as comprehensive control possibilities through diagnostic routines. Supplementary protective functions are now realized with software programs and no longer need additional hardware. Modern digital protection relays provide serial interfaces to link the protection subsystem to the power system main computer by using a standardized transmission protocol
