Abstract
The world´s first advanced series compensator (ASC) with controllable series impedance as a flexible AC transmission (FACTS) device has started commercial operation. The protection for this three-phase ASC scheme is based on the protection of conventional fixed series compensators. Under overload conditions operation can be prolonged by interactions with ASC controls. Thorough digital and transient network analyzer (TNA) tests have been made to verify the correct behaviour. Field tests proved these results
