Abstract
This paper presents a new consumer VCR format, MICROMV, and a high density recording system which uses the MR (magneto resistive) head. A small-sized cassette of 12 cc volume stores one-hour of 12 Mbit/s MPEG2 picture, which corresponds to 6.5 gigabytes of data. The MR head system realizes the areal density of 0.8 Gbit/inch/sup 2/ which is more than 3 times as large as that of the DVC format.
