Abstract :
Summary form only given. Photomultipliers tubes (PMT) are the detectors primarily utilized in lidar systems for the ultraviolet spectral region. PMTs exhibit good quantum efficiency (/spl les/30%), high gain and relatively low noise compared to solid state UV detectors. PMTs are widely used in ozone differential absorption lidar (DIAL) ground and aircraft based systems.
