Impact of renewable generation in the Spanish Electricity Market

The influence of the integration of various amount of generation form renewable sources in the Spanish/Iberian Electricity Market is addressed in this work. To reach that goal the hourly information data published by the Spanish/Iberian Market Operator (OMEL/OMIE) for the five-year period 2008-2012 was used. A method similar to the procedure used by the Market Operator has been used to analyze the effect of the integration of generation based on renewable energy in the wholesale market. Previously, the effect of the complex bids on the cost of the traded energy is examined. For the considered period, the reduction of the cost of the traded energy in the market due the integration of renewable producers was 8% greater than the premium paid by the consumers, while the complex bids are responsible of almost a half of the actual cost of the traded energy.
