Distribution automation is practised to varying degrees around the world and is of interest to all power system engineers. Its importance has increased in the United Kingdom following privatisation of the Industry and the consequent increased focus on customer service. Midlands Electricity has embarked on a re-definition of its supply reliability standard after visiting a number of utilities around the world; its findings and its new approach are described
