Abstract
We report the first demonstration of high power diode-pumped mid-IR (up to /spl sim/700 mW) Er fiber lasers. This was achieved by using custom double-clad fluoride fibers and efficient depopulation of the lower laser level, by enhanced cross-relaxation between Er ions and energy transfer to Pr ions.
