Abstract
ATM is the basic transport mechanism for future broadband integrated service digital networks (B-ISDN) and allows services with highly diverse requirements. This paper focuses primarily on the work being done in the Defence Research Agency (DRA) on transporting ATM over military satellites and the broader issue of integrating SATCOM seamlessly into terrestrial wide area networks. Some of the issues are not unique to ATM, but are fundamental to any packet protocol used over MILSATCOM, some of the concerns are specific to ATM. It also describes the EHF package proposed for Skynet 5, geolocation of unauthorised users of geostationary satellites and the DELOS package being developed in the DRA
