Abstract
Future in-vehicle safety systems that employ wireless communication between vehicles are predicted to have the ability to perform a precise assessment of hazards in traffic. However, these systems can operate effectively only when based on efficient inter-vehicle safety communication. This paper focuses on the evaluation of a protocol that we propose for safety vehicular communication. We introduce this solution and investigate if it can fulfill the requirements of safety applications, and the requirements imposed by the vehicular environment. For performing the evaluation, we define key performance metrics, and develop a dedicated evaluation environment. The results of the evaluation indicate that the proposed communication protocol can provide an efficient support to on-board safety systems.
