Abstract :
IEEE Standard 841 was developed to identify additional specific features deemed necessary for application of induction motors in the petroleum and chemical industry. The IEEE/IAS Pulp & Paper Industry Committee has also been studying the IEEE Standard 841 for possible adoption by the pulp & paper industry. Members of the PPIC Ad Hoc Committee on IEEE 841 have suggested additional requirements to those in the existing standard. This paper discusses a comparison testing program conducted by the Motor Systems Resource Facility (MSRF), an industrial motor/drive research and testing laboratory at Oregon State University. This testing program was supplemental to a previous industrial investigation of IEEE Standard 841 motors conducted in 2000-2001. Seven (7) major motor manufacturers participated in the original study. Each manufacturer provided a 50 hp, a 100 hp and a 200 hp "standard" IEEE 841 motor for examination on delivery, and IEEE 112 Method A efficiency testing. Two (2) additional manufacturers submitted the same range of motors for inclusion in this study in 2003-2004, and these are now included in this follow-up paper. All of the motors were horizontal, 3 phase, 60 hertz, 4-pole, and 460 volts (except one that was 575 volts)
