  • Abstract
Summary form only given. There are numerous reports of rare earth ions in glasses [1], but most of these are focused upon optical behavior and are thus more dilute than those compositions expected to show semiconducting behavior. The 3d and 4d transition metal oxide glasses have been extensively studied over the past 20 years because of interest in their semiconducting properties [2]. The purpose of the present .paper is t examine such correlations as exist between the behavior of the samarium 4f glass with the more extensively characterized 3d and 4d glasses. The electrical conductivity of samarium oxide doped sodium ´barium borate glasses, having composition in weight percent 56 B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ 29 Na/sub 2/O 10 BaO 5 Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ X Sm/sub 2/O/sub 3/ where ( X=O, 2, 5, 7 wt.%) has been 2 2 3 2 9 measured in the temperature range 343 to 500 K. The results indicate that the conductivity decreases slightly with increased samarium oxide content.
