Abstract :
Modern cable TV distribution plants offer many advantages in providing personal communication services (PCS) to the public. The author reviews the evolution of cable TV architectures from an all coaxial cable tree and branch to a fiber-rich double star network. The cable TV industry has invested considerable capital and resources to improve the reliability and the quality of their distribution plants. In this process, the industry has developed a multipurpose private network with tremendous capacity to provide many additional broadband communication services. Because most of the infrastructure is already in place, the cable TV industry is in a position to speed PCS service to the public with a minimum of additional investment. The natural advantages of the cable network as a platform for PCS are presented
