  • Abstract
The integration of multiwavelength technology into practical fiber optic communication systems is gradually becoming a reality because the required important wavelength tunable components are readily available. The author reviews several important multiwavelength system applications and briefly describes the key components, both commercially available and the state-of-the-art, for those systems. The components discussed are narrow-linewidth tunable lasers, high-performance fiber optic inline tunable filters, N×N star couplers, and Er+-doped fiber amplifiers for wavelength division multiplex/demultiplex (WDM) networks, and multiwavelength photonic switches for broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) systems
