Abstract
Temperature effects on the performance of an Induction Motor (IM) and a Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is compared. Two Dimensional (2D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to calculate loss components in both motors at the same operating condition. A 3D FEA is then employed to calculate temperature rise in each motor. This has been used to update the material properties. Based on an iterative algorithm, the steady state performance of both motors is obtained and compared which shows the superior performance of the SRM as a heat tolerant motor.
