  • Abstract
In a wide area measurement system (WAMS), measurements captured by phasor measurement units (PMUs), the most classic time synchronized device are first gathered in phasor data concentrator (PDC) and then send to the power system control centre via communication network. The communication network connecting PMUs, PDCs and the control centre forms the backbone of a WAMS architecture. In this paper, author proposes the two - stage PMU-PDC placement formulation for the advanced functioning of WAMS based modern energy management system (EMS) from application- cost point of view. Proposed optimal placement technique is tested and validated on standard IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 30 bus systems.
