  • Abstract
    This paper describes a wireless environmental monitoring system developed at the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE) 1451.1 standards using the unified modeling language (UML) tool. This system is built on the established object-oriented framework of IEEE 1451.1. It consists of two IEEE 1451.1-based Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP) nodes. These nodes communicate with each other applying the client-server and publisher-subscriber communication models of the IEEE 1451.1 standard and implementing the IEEE 802.11 wireless communication protocol. Two implementations of the interfaces based on the IEEE 1451.1 communication models are explained. One implementation illustrates the publisher-subscriber model by publishing multiple sensor data using UDP/IP Java MulticastSocket. The other implementation illustrates the client-server model through the request and response of sensor TEDS data using TCP/IP Java Socket. The work described in this paper provides some guidelines for developing IEEE 1451.1-based applications
