Abstract :
In this paper a dome-dipole antenna for ultra wideband operation is presensted. The antenna is a 3D generalization of the wideband flare dipole. For wideband impedance matching, the outer surface of the dome dipole was exponentially tapered. This design also led to a more uniform radiation pattern over larger bandwidth. Additionally, a 24" wide and 20" tall prototype of the dome-dipole antenna was fabricated and demonstrated to deliver an operational bandwidth from 180 MHz to at least 14 GHz with greater than 0 dB performance. Of importance is that the calculated E-plane patterns have a consistent main beam over a 140:1 bandwidth.
