Abstract
In the presence of large mesospheric electric fields (1-10 V/m), great perturbations in tropospheric conductivity act to shift the lower edge of the ionosphere upwards (~4-7 km in the daytime and ~ 5-8 km at night) for VLF radio waves and downwards for HF radio waves (~ 6-8 km at 3 MHz).
