Abstract :
This paper investigates the average symbol error rate (SER) performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) maximal-ratio combining (MRC) systems in Rayleigh fading channels. We derive exact closed-form expressions for the average SER of the general rectangular quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The results are applicable to the systems with two antennas at either the transmitter or the receiver. The mathematical formalism is illustrated by some numerical examples which study the effects of various parameters on the MIMO MRC system performance.
