Abstract :
It is noted that Taguchi´s method of engineering optimization allows efficient and effective evaluation of a multitude of design alternatives on the basis of reliability during the preliminary design phase. The key is to optimize the system so that it functions well over a wide operating range while subjected to changing noise factors. When this robust function is achieved, reliability is increased. A system that resists noise such as changing environmental conditions and aging, over the operating range of interest, will be reliable in the field. Implementing this optimization method is often difficult because, to be truly effective, it requires changes in some of the existing engineering paradigms. Instead of using expensive materials and components to increase reliability, one achieves the best possible function with low-cost options, and then upgrades only when and where needed. Instead of relying heavily on theoretical solutions to upstream design issues, empirical experiments intended to optimize robust system function are added to that theoretical information
