  • Abstract
Robot is programmable machine that imitates the actions or appearance of an intelligent creature, usually a human. To qualify as a robot, a machine has to be able to do two things:one, get information from its surroundings, and two, do something physical, such as move or manipulate objects. This paper reviews some fundamental characteristics of past, present and future intelligent robots and addresses in particular the key technologies developed for the humanoid robot HERMES, a prototype of a future personal robotic assistant.
