Abstract :
Summary form only given. An ethylene oxide-phosphate copolymer is synthesized to make a polymer electrolyte by complexing it with an inorganic salt. Phosphoryl chloride is made into alkoxy phosphoryl chloride and then reacted with polyethylene glycol with molecular weight of either 300 or 600 to produce a linear ethylene oxide-phosphate copolymer. The alkoxy group is replaced by polyethylene oxide to make an ethylene oxide-modified phosphate copolymer. The polymer is characterized by various methods and the ionic conductivity of the complex with LiCLO/sub 4/, measured by means of frequency resonance analysis, is in the range of 10/sub -4/ S/cm at room temperature when the weight ratio of the polymer to the salt is 60:1. The polymer shows glass transition temperature of -61/spl deg/C which jumps to -48/spl deg/C when mixed with the salt by the weight ratio of 60:1. An increase in the weight of the salt shows little change in glass transition temperature. It is noted that the ionic conductivity changes little with temperature when the weight ratio of the polymer and the salt is 60:1. The temperature effect becomes significant when the salt concentration is increased against that of the polymer. The polymer electrolyte has a possibility to be used in making a conducting polymer-polymer electrolyte junction to rectify dc current.
